The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation Board of Directors is accepting applications for the position of President and Chief Executive Officer with an effective start date June 1, 2022. Responsibilities of the position are to provide financial and operational oversight of the Foundation and to also perform supervisory functions.

The successful candidate must exhibit exceptional financial abilities, be a self-starter, demonstrate superior written and verbal communication skills, have demonstrated fundraising experience, and have effective management and leadership capabilities.

Job Description

Title: President & CEO
Status: Ful Time, Exempt
Reports to: Board of Directions

The position of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) directs and administers programs and services provided by The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation; ensures that all aspects of the Foundation’s activities are commensurate with the best interest of its contributors; provides the highest level of contributor relations and service; and, ensures compliance with Foundation policies and procedures. The President and CEO attains all established Foundation operational and financial goals; performs supervisory duties of Foundation staff; and reports to the Board of Directors as the highest-ranking official of the Foundation.

Developmental Responsibilities

  • Directs the Foundation’s asset development program including the cultivation of individuals, families, corporations, foundations, professional advisors and non-profits. Directs and develops the Foundation’s grantmaking programs to further the Foundation’s goals. Engages in contribution development activities such as grant writing and soliciting contributions through contacts and other appropriate means to increase the required funds to meet the growing needs of the surrounding communities.
  • Carries out public relations activities such as representing the Foundation at community and civic functions, develops promotional materials and newsletters, issues press releases and conducts social media activities and other marketing efforts.
  • Educates prospective donors, professional advisors and the community at large about the services and activities of the Foundation through presentations and speaking engagements.  Works closely with all contributors to develop short- and long-term plans and programs.
  • Responds to inquiries and exhibits the necessary follow through with contributors.
  • Participates in the state association of community foundations.
  • Maintains membership in appropriate organizations such as the Southeastern Community Foundations.
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations including administrative activities, professional and support staff.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Develops and monitors an annual budget.
  • Executes contracts, grants and commitments authorized by the Board or by established policies.
  • Plans, organizes and directs programs and services, and evaluates results.
  • Initiates and directs ongoing use of electronic information systems for tracking current and potential contributors, contribution histories, fund distributions and other data relevant to the Foundation’s funds and their development.
  • Oversees record keeping including maintenance of Board minutes or other official meetings and the security for all files, legal and historic documents, mailing lists and client files.
  • Coordinates necessary activities needed to conduct the Foundation’s business.
  • Performs personnel actions in accordance with the Foundation’s policies and applicable employment laws including directing staff work and daily activities, conducting staff performance appraisals and disciplinary actions and interviewing candidates for employment.

Directional Responsibilities

  • Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors.
  • Serves on Board Executive Committees as required.
  • Plans, formulates and recommends for the approval of the Board basic policies and programs that will further the Foundation’s tasks, objectives and goals.
  • Recommends annual program goals of the Board; ensures an ongoing evaluation system exists related to such goals; and provides progress reports to the Board regularly.
  • Executes all Board decisions, ensuring that tasks, objectives and goals designated and approved by the Board are fulfilled as directed.
  • Informs the Board on the conditions and operations of the Foundation and the important factors influencing operations and decisions.
  • Provides guidance on matters of program, publications, budget and legal responsibility.
  • Complies with all applicable nonprofit laws and regulations.


  • Minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree in business, finance or related field. 
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in business and/or finance. Understanding of fundraising in the nonprofit industry.
