BILL QUILLIAN RECEIVES PHILANTHROPY AWARD

William F. Quillian, Jr., retired Randolph Macon Woman’s College President, former Central Fidelity Bank Senior Vice President, and first Executive Director of The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation was recently honored as The Community Foundation’s first recipient of the organization’s Philanthropy Award as a part of the organization’s 40th Anniversary Celebration. The award is very appropriately named The Quillian Award in honor of Margaret and Bill Quillian who have exemplified philanthropy, endowment giving, and service to community during their lifetime.

Bill Quillian, who is 98 years old, is well known for his service to community and for his fund raising skills. He was the keynote speaker at The Community Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Kickoff Luncheon and held the audience spellbound with his wealth of experience and his dry wit.

In presenting the award to Quillian, retired Lynchburg attorney Kenneth S. White stated, “The Community Foundation Board of Directors wanted to honor the person who best mirrored Quillian’s philosophy, zeal for philanthropy, and experience working in the Lynchburg community, and they decided there was only one individual who could fit the Quillian mold closely enough, and that individual was William F. Quillian, Jr. himself.”

The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation was established in 1972 and exists to promote local philanthropy and to simplify the process of planned giving. The Community Foundation receives and manages permanent gifts for the benefit of the citizens of the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell. Needs served are broad in scope including human services to children, youth, the needy and the elderly; education; health; the arts; the humanities; and economic development.

The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation currently has 185 special and unrestricted funds, with assets of $28 million. The Community Foundation currently makes grants of over $1.3 million annually in our community.
