DistributionTHE Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation DISTRIBUTED $1.3 MILLION IN GRANTS IN 2011

The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation recently announced a total of $315,021 in new grants to 56 non-profit community agencies during the organization’s fall cycle, bringing total grants issued in 2011 to $1,388,617. The Community Foundation was established in 1972 and has returned $12.2 million in grants and scholarships to our community since its inception.

The Community Foundation provides support to programs in the Cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and the Counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell. Needs served are broad in scope including human services to children, the needy, and the elderly; education; the arts; and the humanities. The Community Foundation exists to promote local philanthropy, to allow citizens a convenient means to give back to their community, and to simplify the process of giving.

The Community Foundation reviews grant applications from area agencies during two cycles each year. Its spring cycle has a March 15 deadline, and its fall cycle has a September 15 deadline. Applications are reviewed by the organization’s Distribution Committee whose current members include John Flippin, Chair; John Alford, Jr., MaryJane Dolan, Hank Hubbard, Sandy McKenna, Gus Petticolas, Jim Richards, Marc Schewel, and Massie Ware.

The Community Foundation currently consists of 187 named funds and an unrestricted fund, with assets aggregating over $25 million. It is one of approximately 700 such community foundations across the nation rendering a valuable service both to the regions they serve and also to donors interested in the present and future of their communities.
