(Lynchburg, VA - December 15, 2021) - The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation (GLCF or Foundation) Board of Directors announces that President and Chief Executive Officer William (Bill) J. Bodine intends to retire at the end of the foundation’s fiscal year, June 30, 2022. Bodine has been at the helm of the nonprofit since July 2015 and is the sixth person to head the organization since its founding in 1972. The Board has formed a search committee comprising both GLCF board members and community leaders to find a new leader when Bodine’s tenure concludes.Bill Bodine

"On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are deeply grateful for Bill's service to the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation," states John Stone, vice chair of the board and chair of the search committee. "Bill is an outstanding leader who has amplified community awareness of the Foundation, broadened the donor base and overseen the establishment of dozens of new donor funds. His tenure culminates in record-setting annual grants to area nonprofits and a general expansion of the philanthropic bent of our community.

Lynchburg and the surrounding communities have benefited from Bill’s vision and stewardship as leader of the Foundation. The Board and the Foundation’s staff wish Bill all the best as he prepares to enter this new chapter in his life."

During his term, the Foundation’s fund assets grew by more than $21.0 million and its managed named funds increased from 234 in 2015 to a current 283. In fiscal year 2020-2021, a total of 168 local nonprofits received nearly $2.0 million in distributed funds from the organization.

Under Bodine’s six years of stewardship the Foundation established the Century Fund, following a successful million dollar fundraising campaign. Two Century Fund grants of $100,000 each have since been awarded. GLCF also continued to gain national accreditation through the Council on Foundations and established a partnership with the University of Lynchburg to ascertain better grant results data. The organization developed and sponsored the new SHARE Greater Lynchburg program that lists 125 nonprofits on a website with associated events, volunteer opportunities and ways to donate to better bring the Lynchburg community together. GLCF also serves as the fiscal manager for the Caring Meters program that collects donations submitted in downtown meters and contributes the funds to various local nonprofit organizations.

Born in New Jersey, Bodine is a graduate of Lynchburg College (now, the University of Lynchburg) earning a degree in business administration and a master’s in administration. He began his career as laboratory manager at Lynchburg General Hospital and continued his career in the healthcare profession serving as a medical technology sales representative, a medical practice manager and business consultant for various independent medical practices throughout southwest Virginia, as well as director for several Centra practices. Active in the community, Bodine has served on multiple boards including Virginians for the Arts, Riverviews Artspace, the Academy Center for the Arts, Cherry Tree Players, Commerce Street Theater and president of the Lynchburg College Alumni Board of Directors. He has volunteered for multiple local nonprofits and has performed professionally with Endstation Theatre Company, Opera on the James and Wolfbane Theatre Company - performing in more than 60 local productions.

Bodine is married to Terry and has two sons, a stepdaughter, and three grandchildren.
